The AI-Native Era

Today's programmers are no longer writing code alone; they are working side by side with AI tools that can suggest, explain, and even write code for them. This workshop explores what that means for the future of software engineering.

How will developers learn, collaborate, and think differently when AI becomes part of their daily work? How should companies train and hire them? And how should universities reshape their teaching and curricula to prepare students for this new reality? How can we design tools to support them?

We'll bring together researchers, educators, and professionals to imagine the future of "AI-native developers"—those who grow up coding with AI from day one—and to discuss how to help them work safely, creatively, and effectively with AI assistants.

Workshop Topics

Exploring the multi-faceted impact of AI-assisted programming workflows.

Understanding AI Native Developers

  • How are companies integrating tools like Copilot, ChatGPT into real-world workflows?
  • What training and onboarding practices help developers collaborate effectively with AI?
  • How is the developer's role evolving when AI can generate large portions of code?
  • How do we define and evaluate productivity in AI-augmented workflows?
  • What is developer experience in the era of AI?

Supporting AI Native Developers

  • How can development tools better support mixed-initiative collaboration?
  • What design principles enable effective human-AI co-creation in software development?
  • How can we improve transparency, trust, and control in AI-assisted programming workflows?

Training AI Native Developers

  • What new competencies are required to critique, verify, and maintain AI-generated code?
  • How should workplace training and education adapt to AI-augmented development?
  • How should instructors adapt assignments, assessments, and feedback when students use AI tools?
  • How might curricula evolve to include prompt engineering, model reasoning, and code critique?
  • Which traditional competencies remain essential?
  • What new competencies are required in human-AI collaboration to excel?
